Smallholder Initiative in West Africa (Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Ghana) The main purpose of this 3-year project (2003-2006) is to help resource poor farmers, primarily in Mali and Senegal, to raise their income by using improved technologies on their farms and to establish private-sector driven input delivery systems. A major emphasis is placed on the introduction of hybrid maize varieties and the relevant agricultural practices they require. Close interaction with the national agricultural system for the validation and certification of varieties being introduced is taking place. Facilitating linkages between farmers’ communities, the private sector (inputs and markets) and credit associations is also a major preoccupation of the project. Results to-date illustrate that hybrids outperform other varieties in terms of yield and income generation, and are in increasing demand among farmers. The total grant amount from Monsanto Fund equals USD 372,000. |

Production and Marketing of Maize (Mali) Funding: PRODEPAM This US $ 20,000 pilot project involves a test of large scale contract farming for hybrid maize production in order to improve the maize supply chain in Mali. The maize hybrids tests in the region of Sikasso (communities of Bougouni, Sikasso, Dialocoro, Ouéléssébougou) and Koulikoro (communities of Sanankoroba, Dialakoroba, Dangassa) have allowed for farmer associations to expand varieties. The project is one of the positive results of the technology testing and demonstration activities that have been implemented under SIWA. The project is likely to improve the Malian maize production sector significantly. Of the USD $20,000, $13,500 has served as payments of fertilizers, of which farmers are fully reimbursing to PRODEPAM. EUCORD’s role includes: -Training of maize producers and follow-up of crops -Provide seed inputs (SOTUBAKA variety) and fertilizers -Ensure proper project execution and supervision of activities -Improve access to technology and capacity building of maize producers The results of the project involved the complete training of all producers, reimbursement of the fertilizer advances of $13,500, and 92 tons of commercialized maize. |
